Packing for your Move
Packing for your move will be different depending on whether you choose self service moving or pay for a moving company to do it for you. Even when paying for moving company then often you will have the option to pack yourself to reduce the cost of the move. If you are packing your own things then we have prepared the following list of tips for packing for your move:
Pack all loose things
Apart from the large items like furniture, everything else should be packed into boxes. By having everything in boxes it will greatly reduce the time taken to move on moving day and will make it much easier than trying to move loose items.
Getting friends and family to help with moving is always a good option and it will be greatly appreciated if it isn't 'difficult' to move with lots of loose items.
Pack so things don't get damaged
Whether you are moving yourself or getting somebody else to do it for you, there is always the possibility of things getting broken. Whether by being dropped or by bumps in the road, it is usual that something always gets broken on a move, but you can takes measures to minimize possible damage.
Wrapping breakables separately in bubble wrap and/or newspaper will greatly help in not breaking things in your move. Always remember to wrap the most important things that you wouldn't want to be broken the most.
Pack so boxes aren't too heavy
Always makes sure you pack heavy items in small boxes and lighter items in bigger boxes. A big box of books isn't just impractical to carry it can be very dangerous.
Pack to make it easy to unpack
To make it easy to unpack, always make sure that you pack each rooms things into their own clearly marked boxes. When you get to your new place, you can then put the correct boxes in each room and then systematically through each room and easily unpack. Having mixed boxes with contents from different rooms make unpacking much more difficult and should be avoided at all costs.
Pack essentials for first night in house
Moving is not an easy thing to do and usually can't be fully done in one day. It is important that you pack the essentials for your first night in your new place, in an easy to find, clearly marked box or boxes. Although everybody is different and requires different things on their first night, often required items are toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste, plates, cups and essential food items.
Pack records an plates properly
It is important to pack records and plates vertically instead of on top of each other horizontally. This will give them the best chance of getting their in one piece.
Remove lightbulbs
Remove lightbulbs from lamps before packing. They often break in transit.
Take time to do it right
Never leave packing to the last minute. By taking the time to pack correctly, you can save time on the moving day, make sure everything gets there in one piece and make your life much easier throughout the whole process and even help save friendships.
