If moving cross-country, you'll probably arrive before your truck rental vehicle. Find out what to pack and bring along so that you'll be prepared for that first week.
If choosing a self-service type of move, you handle all of the packing, unpacking, loading and unloading of the truck rental vehicle. But one part of the move that you're not responsible for is the driving of the truck rental. And if you happen to be moving cross-country, you might arrive a week ahead of the truck rental vehicle if you decide to fly to your new destination. So what happens in the meantime until your belongings arrive? Follow our quick tips below on how to make that transitionary period as comfortable as possible.
Pack a suitcase of air mattresses
Since your beds won't arrive with your truck rental until a week or so later, you'll need to have something to sleep on. Bring a few air mattresses; when deflated, they're compact and lightweight.
Don't forget the linen
You'll need to pack some sheets and blankets for your mattresses. And bring alone some towels for each person in the family. Again, these things are lightweight enough to pack and carry on your flight.
Toiletries
Pack a small suitcase of your basic toiletries such as shampoos, toothbrushes and soap. You don't have to go crazy though, as you can buy most of the items when you arrive at your new place.
Clothes
Pack enough clothes for each family member for a week. Don't forget to bring appropriate clothes according to your new location. For instance, if you live on the west coast but are moving to the east coast, in the dead of winter, bring along a heavy coat, boots and warm clothes.
Kitchenware
Bring along enough of the basics to get you buy until the truck rental vehicle arrives at your new location. That can include such things as a couple pots, utensils, bowels and hand-towels. You can buy paper plates and silverware when you arrive.
The laptop and phone
In today's modern technological age, you can have your house fitted for wireless connection for your laptop in just a couple of days. And don't forget to bring your phones, as you can usually get a new line within 48 hours of your truck rental move.
