Avoiding the Pitfalls when Choosing a Truck Rental Company

abstract:

If the proper preparation is taken, it's easy to avoid pitfalls when signing up for a truck rental.  Before signing, research the various companies, ask for a written estimate and review the written contract.

When renting a truck rental, it's tempting to just walk into the first truck rental company that you see and choose the first truck that meets your needs.  But even if you're in a hurry to book that vehicle, it might be a costly mistake if done hastily.  As with just about everything else in life, preparation is the key to finding a good deal and it can help you avoid any problems that might arise from a hasty decision.  Here are some suggestions that can ensure that you avoid any possible pitfalls when signing up for a truck rental.

Research companies beforehand

Even if you have limited time, take an hour or so to call a few companies in your area and ask them how long they've been in business.  See if they will provide you with a few references that you can call.  Check with the better business bureau as well to see if the truck rental company has any registered complaints.  If it has only a few minor complaints, don't disregard the company completely.  Ask the truck rental company about the specific incident or complaint.

Request an estimate in writing

Once you've narrowed your selection down to a few truck rental companies, ask for written estimates.  Make sure that there are no hidden fees by requesting that the manager sign a statement on the estimate to that effect.  If the manager hesitates and refuses to comply, move on to the next company.

Don't rent without reviewing the actual contract

Even if you have a written estimate in hand, don't rent the truck until you review the actual truck rental contract.  Review line by line, especially when it comes to the fees portion of the contract.  And if something is not clear, don't hesitate to ask the sales rep for clarification.  For instance, if the contract states that late charges will apply if the truck rental is dropped off after hours, find out what the hours of operation are for drop-off and what are the extra fees.  If the contract says that one-way rental fees may apply, inquire as to what that extra fee might be.
