Planning a move can be quite overwhelming. Besides closing the deal on your new place, you'll have to purchase moving supplies, set up a packing schedule and request a few days off of work so that you can pack and unpack your belongings. And if you're choosing a do-it-yourself move, you'll have to select a truck rental company for your rental truck. To help you choose the best truck rental company for the job, we've listed some tips that can help you decide which company to choose.
Find out if there is more than one branch
Unless you live within 30 miles or so of your current residence, you will probably want to rent the truck one way (cheaper prices for an intrastate move) and you'll want to drop off the drop in another branch close to your new place. But if the truck rental company only has one branch, you probably won't have that option. Therefore, ask the company if they have other branches and if so, where they're located.
Compare prices
Get quotes from at least three different truck rental companies. But take into account any mileage restrictions. A daily rate at one company might be lower than at another company, but it might charge for mileage over a certain limit. Another key factor to consider is the daily rate for insurance. Again, the company with the cheaper daily rate might have a more expensive insurance rate per day.
Find out the types of vehicles that are carried
See if the truck rental company has the vehicle size you need. If you need to move a five-bedroom house and the biggest truck they have is a 16-foot truck, it won't suffice. On the hand, if the company only carries bigger size trucks (i.e. 16 and 24-foot trucks) and you're only moving a one-bedroom apartment that also won't meet your needs. And if you require air-conditioning and other particular features (i.e. dual faced mirrors), find out if their trucks come equipped with those features.
Inquire about the drop-off policy
Find out the truck rental companies' drop-off policy. Some companies let you drop off the vehicle after working hours while others request that you drop off the truck during specific times. If your schedule isn't flexible, you might have to choose that company with a more lenient drop-off policy.
