Considering the Truck Rental Space

abstract:

Before choosing a truck rental vehicle, find out how much space you'll need.  Generally, you'll need 150 cubic feet for each room.

If you've researched your moving type options and you've decided upon a do-it-yourself or truck rental move, the next decision you'll need to make is the size truck that you'll want to rent.  And since this will be the bulk of the money that you'll be spending on your truck rental move, it's important that you choose the right size truck rental for your move.  Here are some things to consider before renting the vehicle.

The distance from residences

If your new place is relatively close (within 45 minutes) to your old residence, you might be able to get by on renting a smaller truck rental vehicle since you could realistically make a couple trips back and forth.  In other words, with this scenario, renting the vehicle that fits your exact needs is not as crucial.  But do consider the time factor involved in driving back and forth plus the inconvenience of having to load and unload another truck's worth of belongings.

Consider the size

Different truck rental companies carry different size trucks, but for the most part, common sizes are the 10-footer, 16-footer and the 24 or 26 footer. With so many different sized truck rentals to choose from, how do you know which size is appropriate for your move?  Basically, each room takes about 150 cubic feet of space to pack. In other words, if you have a three-bedroom house that includes a living room and den, you'll need 750 cubic feet (150 x 7) of truck space.  Now, take that number and check the capacity guidelines of each sized truck rental. For example, if you do have 750 cubic feet of belongings, you'll need to check the different truck capacities to see if you need a 16-footer or a 24-footer.  Most truck rental companies will have pictures and specs online for each of their different vehicles.  If you're still unsure of what size truck to rent, ask the sales representatives from the different rental companies.

Driving the truck

Another factor to consider before renting the vehicle is your ability or comfort level in driving a particular size truck.  If you're a bit nervous about driving a truck, choose the smallest truck possible for your move.
