Deciding Upon a Truck Rental Company

abstract:

Deciding upon the best truck rental company for your needs can be challenging.  Read our reference check questions to help you make that decision.

If you've never needed a truck rental company until now, you'll be surprised about how many truck rental companies there are.  With so many companies, how do you know which one to choose?  Read our tips below that will help you separate the good ones from the not-so-good companies.  Though our tips aren't flawless for choosing the right truck rental company, it at least it will help you navigate through the long list of companies.

Scour the Internet

Like for anything else today, the Internet is a great resource for finding top truck rental companies.  Look for a site that provides you with information on pricing, vehicle descriptions and any other hidden costs that might arise (i.e. insurance fees, drop-off fees, return trip fees).  Basically, the more upfront the company's site is, the better.  And look for any testimonials that might be listed or a listing of past companies that have used their service.  Even take the time to call any of those listed companies to inquire about their service.

Ask for references

Once you've narrowed it down to four to five sites, phone the companies with any additional questions that you have.  And make sure to ask for at least three or four references from past customers.  Once you've got those names, call them up and ask some of the following questions:

Overall, were you happy with the truck rental?

Was the truck dependable or did you have any mechanical or other problems (i.e. air conditioning not working)?

Were they're any hidden charges that showed up on the final bill?  If so, what were they?

Were you satisfied with their overall customer service?  If not, why?

Were you able to rent equipment from the company (i.e. dollies, hand trucks)?

Did you rent the truck one way?  If so, were you able to drop off the truck rental anytime you wanted, or did you have to return the vehicle during working hours?

Would you rent from them again for your next move?

Ask your friends and family

Besides the Internet, ask any of your friends or family members that have recently moved with a truck rental for recommendations.  Ask them similar questions as above so that you can get an overall picture of the truck rental company.
