The U.S. Census Bureau's stats on "why people move" backs up that assumption, as exactly half of the respondents answered that "housing" was the main reason for the truck rental or other type of move. Here is the exact breakdown as to specific reasons for the "housing" move.
Wanted to own home
The desire to own a home was a major reason (9.8%) for a truck rental, full-service or other type of move. In the States, more so than in Europe, home-ownership is extremely valued, as most people aspire to owning their own home one day. And it can also be considered as an investment or a place to give the kids once they retire.
New/better house or apartment
The biggest reason for a "housing" move (as well as other reasons for moving) was due to moving in to a new or better house or apartment. This reason for a truck rental or other type of move constituted 18.9% of the total reasons for moving. This means that people are basically interested in "moving up" into a better housing situation. That's often the case when people have saved a little and can sell their existing "starter home" for something more spacious.
Better neighborhood/less crime
Neighborhoods often change and many times not for the better. Crime might have increased since a person first moved into a neighborhood or the condition of homes might have deteriorated through the years. In all, 3.6% of the respondents stated that a better neighborhood and/or less crime were the reasons for a truck rental, full-service or any other type of move.
Cheaper housing
Moving because of cheaper housing was a reason for a truck rental or other type of move 6.6% of the time. That can be especially true if one loses a job, expenses increase or if the economy is bad.
Other housing reasons
Other housing reasons constituted of 11.1% of the other "housing" reasons for a truck rental or different type of move.
