The Ins and Outs of a Self-Service, Truck Rental Move

abstract:

With a self-service move, the only thing certain is that you'll need to pay for the truck rental.  Otherwise, you decide how much of the move you want to do by yourself.

If you're looking to save a bit of money on your impending move, but you don't want to choose the old-fashioned do-it-yourself type of move, consider a self-service move.  This type of truck rental move can save you money while at the same time offer you the opportunity to take a break from some of the moving responsibilities.  Here's how.

With a self-service move, you call the shots as far as how much of the move you want to be involved in.  The only thing that's for sure is that you'll need to pay for the truck rental vehicle.  And since there are a large number of truck rental companies to choose from, don't choose the first one you come across.  Do your homework and compare costs and sizes of truck rentals, since not all companies offer similar size trucks. And with a self-service move, you do not have to drive the truck rental (as opposed to a do-it-yourself where you also drive the truck).

Once you've rented the vehicle, you can decide how much of the move you want to take upon yourself or how much you want to contract out.  For instance, you can decide to hire a couple of movers either from placing an ad in the local newspaper (i.e. temporary movers wanted) or from a moving company to help with the loading and unloading of the truck rental.  With the second option, most people are not aware that moving companies have help for hire (without having to pay for the more expensive full-service moving option).  These contracted workers are usually paid a base rate for a specific amount of time, and anything above that will cost you extra.

And if you want even more help, consider asking a few friends or family members to help with the packing and unpacking.  If that's not possible or realistic, consider hiring temporary workers to help you with the packing and unpacking of your belongings.  Again, you can place an ad in the local paper or put up a sign at the local high schools or colleges or even place an ad online on one of the many list serves that advertise jobs.
