Keeping track of your possessions with a truck rental move demands creating a workable inventory system. Find out how to create that system so that no items get lost or left behind.
A do-it-yourself or truck rental move is much lighter on the budget than a full-service move, though certain precautions must be taken to insure a smooth move as possible. One of those precautions is to keep track of your possessions, on and off the truck rental. To accomplish this task, we've put together some helpful hints that will hopefully ease any worries during the move.
Create an inventory sheet
Though it might sound like a bit too much, creating an inventory sheet for your belongings can save you a lot of headache during your truck rental move. Here's how it works. Each and every box should be labeled on the outside with a number, the general contents (i.e. boy's clothes, toiletries, dishes) and the room that you want the box to be placed in at your new place (i.e. living room, kitchen, master bathroom). For instance, when packing up your kid's toys, place a number 5 on the box, along with the room designation (i.e. playroom) and general listing of contents (toys).
Once all of your boxes are properly labeled (number, room placement and general contents), you'll be ready to write up the boxes on the inventory sheet. This sheet should include three columns so that you can note the details. To make it easier for yourself, list the boxes according to number (ascending order).
Loading up the truck rental
When loading up the boxes into the truck rental, make a check by each box number once it's in the vehicle. That way you'll be assured that all boxes have been packed into the truck and not left behind in a closet or some other part of the house.
Unloading the truck rental
Just like when loading the boxes, you'll need to check off the boxes as you unload them and place them in the house. In other words, you'll have two checks (use different color pens); one for loading and one for unloading. That will create a double check for you, as you'll know whether or not all of the boxes have made it to your new place. It may not be a full-proof system, but it certainly comes close.
