One way and roundtrip truck rental options each have its pros and cons. Find out when it makes more sense to choose a one-way rental and when it's smarter to choose a roundtrip rental.
If you're in the market for a truck rental, you've undoubtedly heard the lingo "one way rental" and "roundtrip rental." Though these terms are fairly clear, you might still be undecided as to which option to choose. To help you make that decision, we've listed the pros and cons of each of these two truck rental options below.
One way travel
One-way travel is a great option if you're traveling within the state and the truck rental company has a drop-off location nearby. That way you don't have to worry about driving the truck back to the original location, which could be expensive and inconvenient if you're located far away. Besides having to pay for less gas, the overall fee for a one-way truck rental within a state is usually cheaper. On the other hand, if you're planning to move to another state, the charge for a one-way truck rental will more than likely be more expensive than a roundtrip rental since they often charge an extra fee for the privilege of dropping off the truck in another state.
Most medium to larger size rental companies offer this one-way truck rental option.
Roundtrip travel
Roundtrip travel is the option to choose if you're moving to another state and want to save money, as rental companies usually charge a return trip fee if you do decide upon one-way travel. But before you choose this option, weigh the cost of gas; it might wipe out any difference between a one-way travel fee and a roundtrip fee. And you'll also have to take into consideration the extra insurance costs for roundtrip travel. Each and every day that you rent the truck, you'll probably choose to insure the truck. That can be quite pricey if it takes you a few days to return the truck. Not only that, but you'll have to arrange for return transportation, which is an additional cost.
And don't forget to factor in the inconvenience factor for a roundtrip truck rental. You may not have the time to drive the truck back to the original location, so no matter how much money you might save you may not have that luxury.
