Self-service moves can save you money, especially if you know how to properly pack up your truck rental. Read our packing tips that can help you best pack up your truck rental.
Choosing a self-service move over a full-service move will save you money, but you will need to know how to properly load up your truck rental for the move. Otherwise, your belongings can get damaged or they might not all fit in the truck rental vehicle that you leased for the move. That's especially crucial if you're sharing the truck rental space with other customers, as you will be designated a specific area for packing, and nothing more. So how do ensure that you use the space to its fullest? Read below for our truck rental packing tips.
Request to be the first to load the truck
To guarantee that your belongings move the least in the truck rental, request to be the first customer for a shared truck. Just keep in mind, however, that you'll be the last to unload your belongings. If there's only one other customer sharing the truck and they live close by, it's not a big deal. On the other hand, if there are two other customers sharing the truck and they don't live that close to you, consider asking for a different shared truck rental.
Loading up your area
Loading up your belongings on the truck doesn't mean throwing in your boxes haphazardly, even if you do have the area closest to the driver. Start loading your boxes, with the heavier ones on the bottom. Pack them line-by- line, with each line of boxes acting as a fortifying wall. Stack the boxes as high as possible and without leaving any huge gaps.
After loading up all of your boxes, start placing the furniture into the truck. Any big pieces like couches should be placed on their ends in order to maximize space. To further save space, dissemble any furniture prior to loading such as a coffee table or nightstands. Just remember to keep track of any hardware.
Mattresses/box springs and appliances
Next, place mattresses and box springs along the walls of the truck rental. Again, this will help maximize the amount of space in the truck. Then, load up the appliances in front of the mattresses/box springs, which will help keep the lighter weight mattresses and box springs in place.
