Self service moving is the term that has been given to any method of moving where you load, drive, or pack yourself. There are a few different types of self service moving companies, so it is important to weight your options when you are looking into this method. You should always realize that a self service move will cost less than a full service move, but you can expect to put a lot more time into the effort.
Rental Trucks
This is a form of moving where you pack yourself and all the contents of your home into a truck that you have rented. There are various different sizes of truck rentals available to you, and you should rent a truck that will allow you to take the fewest trips while moving. If you are moving across the country, then you need to consider renting the largest size so that you can pack everything you own into it.
Remember that you have to provide your own packing supplies for this kind of self service move. You also need to load and unload on your own. Finally, remember that you are responsible for driving the truck from your current location to your destination.
You Pack Method
The You Pack method is another form of self service moving. When you choose to take this route, you will be packing and loading your goods into a preassigned area. Sometimes this is a portion of a truck and sometimes this is a storage crate. What you are loading into depends on the company that you hire. You will also be responsible for the unloading of this set space at the other end of the move, but you will not have to worry about actually driving your things to your destination.

Self service moving requires that you take an active role in the packing and moving of your things. In all cases, you will need to get your own packing supplies and pack your own things. You may choose a method where you need to drive as well. Make sure that you have enough time to complete all of these things before you choose to move using this method.
While self service moving is less expensive than a full service move, you can expect to take a lot more time in the overall process. You can hire outside help, however, if you want to make the process a little bit faster. There are various companies out there who simply come in to help pack or load and nothing else. The extent of what you do is totally up to you with this method of relocation.
