A Self-Service Truck Rental Move versus a Full-Service Move

abstract:

Choose from either a self-service truck rental move or a full-service move.  Find out the difference between the two types of moves.

Within the moving industry, there are three main types of moves:  a do-it-yourself move; a self-service move; and a full-service move.  A do-it-yourself move is pretty much self-explanatory.  You basically take care of the actual move by yourself, from driving your own vehicle or renting a truck rental to packing and unpacking and even loading and unloading your goods.  But you may want someone else taking care of some or all of these services.  If so, you have the option of choosing either a self-service move or a full-service type of move.  Here are the main differences between the two.

A self-service move

With a self-service move, you handle everything regarding the move (packing, unpacking, loading and unloading the truck rental) except the actual driving of the truck.  That can be a huge comfort if you don't feel comfortable driving a big truck rental vehicle especially if you're renting a 24 or 26 foot truck.  Since you'll be doing everything except driving the truck rental, the price for this type of move is not much higher than a do-it-yourself type of move.  Just make sure that you garner plenty of help for the loading and unloading of the truck, as one person cannot do it alone.

With a self-service move you'll have a few days to load up the truck rental.  And with this type of move, you'll pay for the overall floor space that you use in the vehicle as opposed to the total weight, as other customers might be sharing the truck rental space.

A full-service move

If you're limited on time and have the budget, a full-service might be the way to go.  The moving company will take care of the loading and unloading of the truck rental as well as the driving of the vehicle.  If you want, you can also pay for the additional service of packing and/or unpacking.  Just make sure you rent the right size truck for your move.  To help you with that assessment, the moving company usually has a staff person that can calculate what size vehicle is appropriate for your move.
