Is a Truck Rental Move Suitable for Me?

abstract:

The truck rental move is a suitable in most cases.  Read some common questions regarding truck rentals along with invaluable answers.

Before diving in headfirst in picking a full-service moving company, consider whether or not a truck rental (do-it-yourself) move is for you.  To help you decide if this type of moving scenario would be suitable for you, we listed some questions and answers about renting a truck for your next move.

I have a limited budget for moving.  Will I save money with a do-it-yourself move?

A do-it-yourself can be up to thousands of dollars cheaper than a full-service move.  With a do-it-yourself move, you only pay for the truck rental (plus some incidentals), whereas with a full-service move, you pay for the workers and the time spent packing, loading, unloading, unpacking and driving the truck.  Even if you go the route where you pack and unpack your belongings by yourself, you'll still pay much more than a do-it-yourself (truck rental) move.

I've never driven a truck before.  Is that a problem?

No, you can drive a truck rental as long as you have a valid driver's license and a credit card to pay for a security deposit on the vehicle (fully refundable once you return the truck).  Before you drive the truck, the truck rental company will explain the ins and outs of driving the vehicle and will show you how to use the side mirrors.  For improved safety, it's smart if you rent a truck that's equipped with dual faced mirrors.

What if I can't lift heavy boxes?  Is the truck rental option still applicable to me?

Just because you can't lift heavy boxes doesn't mean that you have to write off this option.  Enlist family members or friends to help you load and unload the truck.  If you come up empty handed, hire a few workers to help you with the job.  It will still come out a lot cheaper than hiring a moving company.

What if there are no branches to drop off the truck in the new location?

No problem.  You can book a one-way rental, but just realize you'll end up paying for a return trip fee.  But it's not that much more than driving the truck rental back by yourself since a large part of the fee includes the gas, which you would have to pay in any case.
