Truck rental moves make the smartest sense when moving with special needs kids. There's time to pack and load the truck which means there's less pressure during the move.
Moving can be an exasperating experience, even under the most normal circumstances. Throw into that mix moving with special needs kids and you've probably just increased the level of tension during your move. There are things that you can do to decrease the stress level of your impending move if you happen to have special needs kids. Here's how.
Choose a truck rental move
Compared to the other types of moves, a truck rental move makes the most sense for a family with special needs kids. That's because unlike a full-service move where the moving company quickly comes in and ravages through your house to pack and load your belongings, a truck rental move has no set start or end time. You can start packing weeks ahead of time and even start loading the truck rental as soon as the rental period begins. That way your kids can take part in the packing process, and can even load some of their own boxes into the truck if possible.
Choosing a truck rental move is also less stressful when it comes to unloading the belongings. With this type of move, you decide how long you want to take unloading and unpacking your belongings, which creates a much calmer environment.
Prepare them for the move
A month or so prior to the move, tell your special needs kids that you'll be moving to a new home. Reassure them during this time that everything will be okay and even take them to the new place and have them pick out their room (when possible).
Get them involved
As previously mentioned, a truck rental type of move gives your special needs kids the opportunity to pitch in and help. You can give them specific tasks so that they have clear expectations. For instance, have your child pack up their toys and some of their clothes before the move. They can also unpack their belongings when the boxes arrive at the new place. They can also be involved in deciding where they want their furniture placed. And if you have the option, have them pick out their own color paint for the rooms if they're old enough.
