Work related reasons are a big part of why people make that truck rental or other types of moves. Some specific reasons for a work related move are a new job, job transfer or looking for a new job.
Americans move more than just about any other people in the world. With that in mind, the U.S. Census Bureau conducted a study to find out the reason for this phenomenon. After surveying a cross-section of the American population, the results showed that a number of people moved, either through a truck rental move, full-service move or other type of move, due to work related reasons. Overall, that number represented 16.1 % of all the reasons for moving. Here is the specific breakdown.
New job or job transfer
The biggest portion of those who stated that they moved, either through a truck rental move or other type of move, was due to either a new job or job transfer (8.9% of the respondents answered due to these two reasons). So even if a person got a new job 40 miles away, they might have decided to move because of the extra distance and time it takes to commute. Another factor for the move might be that some new companies provide a housing subsidy for a move, especially those cross-country truck rental or full-service moves. In fact, most companies also provide an allowance for the actual truck rental or full-service move. The same holds true for a job transfer that's located outside normal commuting distance.
Looking for work or lost current job
Looking for a new job or losing a current job accounted for 2.1% of the reasons for a truck rental or other type of move. As for looking for a new job, some people might have to change locations because of where the jobs are located. And losing a current might mean that a person might not be able to afford the current rent.
Closer to work or easier commute
3.3% of the people responded that their truck rental or other type of move was due to the fact that they wanted to be closer to work or for an easier commute.
Retired
.3% of the respondents stated that they moved because of retirement, which could be due to downsizing or to the fact they wanted to move to a warmer climate or be closer to their kids.
Other job-related reasons
These reasons accounted for 1.5% of the total percentage.
