Unpacking your Truck Rental

abstract:

Unpacking a truck rental takes planning just like the packing phase of a move.  Read our unpacking tips to help your move as easy as possible.

Packing your truck rental takes a lot of careful planning.  You want to be able to follow a methodical method so that items don't get broken during the move.  Common practices include loading heavier items into the truck rental first such as refrigerators and other big appliances and only then, the lighter weight items/boxes.  But what happens when you drive the truck rental up to your new place and are ready to unload?  Are there any systems that work best for unloading a life's worth of belongings?  Read our tips below that can help you best organize this seemingly difficult task.

Label all boxes

It might seem a little premature, but the minute you start packing should be the time you start worrying about the unpacking part of the move.  In other words, to make the unpacking process run smoother, label each and every box as far as where you want it placed into your new home.  For example, label your box of clothes, "master bedroom" and your kid's toys, "den."  That way when you're ready to unload the truck rental, you won't have to think twice as far as where to put the box.

Draw a floor plan of your new place

Part of the planning process includes drawing a floor plan of your new place.  This will allow you to know where to place boxes and furniture as soon as you lift the boxes out of the truck rental.  And if you have a team of volunteers or paid movers, you can hand them copies of the floor plan so they know where to quickly place your belongings.

Unload all the boxes first

If you've packed your truck rental correctly, all of your boxes should be towards the rear of the truck.  Unload all of the boxes prior to moving out the furniture and appliances.  Place the boxes inside the house and separate them according to room.  Leave a pathway though so you can easily move the big furniture throughout the house.  Next, remove the furniture and appliances and place them in the appropriate areas.  As soon as everything is unloaded, close the truck's rear door and lock it up.  Take a breather and if you have a crew of volunteers, order some refreshments before continuing with the job.
