Local Moving

Local Moves

By Kaida Suyuki, Relocation Specialist, Truck rental.com Staff

A local move is defined as the relocation of your home within the local area. This may mean that you are moving within your current city, or to a neighboring city. People often move locally when they purchase a new home or they simply want to be closer to their place of employment. Local moves are a little bit different than long distance moves, and you should do your research accordingly.

Local Moving Companies

Unlike long distance moving companies, a local moving company will often charge by the hour. You should realize that these companies also charge an hourly rate according to how long they are driving, so you should make sure that you choose a company that is located close to your homes.

Local moving companies will not have the same strict packing rules as some of the long distance companies have, so you can get away with packing less of your things. You can also move a lot of your more fragile items on your own while you allow the company to move the larger things.

Remember, the more things that the company moves, the longer the process will take. If you just want the company to move the large furniture, you should make sure that they know this ahead of time. Remember that there is often a price minimum when you work with a local mover.

Local Truck Rentals

Renting a truck is another way that you can facilitate your local move. There are many companies who offer small trucks that can be used in multiple trips for any local move. This is a good option if you want to take your time and move over the course of a few days. You can also choose the size of your truck, so you can move in as many or as few trips as possible. Keep in mind, however, that a larger truck will use more fuel, and you will be responsible for the fuel costs involved in truck rentals.

Local Moving Overview

Local moves are not any easier than a long distance move. You still need to look into a variety of different options that are open to you. There are many different moving companies that operate in your local area. There are also a variety of different rental truck companies that rent out vehicles in your area.

Remember that a local company will charge by the hour, so the longer they take, the more you will have to pay. If you choose to rent a truck, however, remember to figure in fuel costs along with the rental cost. Either way, you should always weight your options and create a budget before you make a final choice. This will save you stress, time, and money in the end.
