Building a Moving Schedule

Building a Moving Schedule

By Kalianna Nicholoti, Logistical Specialist, Truck rental.com Staff

Scheduling the different aspects of your move is a very important step to making your move go smoothly and as stress free as possible. This is why we have created a basic example of how your moving schedule should go. Feel free to use this as a template to build your very own schedule off of.

Two Month Mark

Two months before you move, you need to schedule and accomplish the following:

  • Create a file to keep all estimates and records in. Keep this in a safe place and do not pack it. Decide on which moving method you will be using. Get medical and school records transferred.
  • Transfer or cancel memberships. Give anything you have borrowed back to its owner. Start notifying friends and family that you are moving. Decide how you will be getting to your new home and make travel plans.

Six Week Mark

Six Weeks before your move, things can be getting pretty hectic. You should make sure that the following things are completed.

  • Contact companies who provide the moving service that you want and get estimates. Decide which company that you are going to hire, and hire them.
  • Research utility companies and requirements in your new location.
  • Procure packing supplies if you are packing yourself.
  • Learn about how to get your driver’s license transferred.
  • Have a yard sale to get rid of things that you don’t need.

One Month Mark

One month before you move, you need to make sure to complete the following:

  • File a change of address form with your local post office.
  • Contact any magazines you have subscriptions for, and change your address with them.
  • Schedule disconnection and connection of utilities to your new home as well as your old home.
  • Find a safe place for important documents such as a safe deposit box or locked safe.
  • Communicate needs to moving company
  • Take pets to veterinarian for check up and shots.
  • Start packing anything you don’t need daily.
  • Donate things that you did not sell.

Two Week Mark

Your moving day is coming up fast! It’s up to you to keep to your schedule. Make sure that you add these things to the ‘to-do list’.

  • Decide if you will be moving or giving away your plants.
  • Confirm any travel plans if you have made them.
  • Cancel the local newspaper.
  • Eat any food that cannot go with you.
  • Pack everything that you will not be using in the next week or so.

One Week Mark

Moving day is almost here! Get the final things together by completing the following:

  • Get rid of hazardous materials, gasoline, and other flammable substances around your home.
  • Make sure all food is either eaten or thrown out.
  • Create a ‘Do Not Move Box’ to keep important things in.
  • Pack your kids and pets and prepare them for the move.

Moving Day!

You made it! Moving day is here! If you created a schedule and followed through on it, then you are well prepared for this day. It’s time to get moving, so make sure that you start your schedule early and feel free to add anything you need to this template. Remember, these are only the basic things that you need to remember. Each person will have a slightly different version, including you!
