Moving with Cats
By Nicole Smith, Pet Specialist, Truck rental.com Staff
Cats are very independent creatures, but they are still members of your family. When you move, cats can sometimes take it personally. You should always take some steps in order to avoid causing more stress than needs to be there. Here are a few tips that you can use to make your cat comfortable during any relocation. Remember, you cannot ask your mover to transport your cat, and you cannot transport them in a truck rental either.
Plan Ahead
When you are going to move any pet, you need to make sure to plan ahead. Many things could go wrong, and you need to be as stress free as possible to take these things in stride. Cats can sense how you feel, so they will inevitably feed off of the stress level that you are carrying around. Thus, it is vital that you plan ahead and avoid panic as much as you can.
Take her to the Vet
Just like dogs, your cats should have a vet check up about a month before your move. Make sure that they are up to date on all shots and that they are not sick in any way. For cats that get carsick, ask your vet for a sedative or other option to guard against a messy trip. Make sure that you get a copy of any vet records before you leave.
The Crate!
You should never try to move a cat into a new place outside of a carrier or a crate. It is best to get your pet used to this enclosed area before you move, so that it is considered a safe haven on moving day. Place a towel or blanket inside that has a familiar scent inside the carrier. This will help your cat travel comfortably.
Exercise
Long trips can be hard on any animal, even one that sleeps for hours at a time. Some people choose to exercise their cats at some point during the trip. If you want to try this, it is vital that you purchase a leash and harness that is made for cats. Remember that cats do not like new places, so don't expect your cat to be happy en route.
Moving Day
On moving day you should confine your cat to an empty room that is labeled as ‘DO NOT OPEN - PETS'. This will keep your pets out of the way and relaxed. Avoid running in and out of this room for the day. The only time you need to go in is to load your cat into the carrier. Make sure that you pack the things that your cat will need during the trip. Food, medication, treats, toys, and updated tags are all things that need to come with you on moving day.
Don't Leave her Behind!
Many people leave their cats behind when they move. Some people will turn them into shelters or let them roam the neighborhood. You don't have to do this! You can take your cat with you! Following these steps will help you to ensure a smooth move for both you and your cat.
