Packing and Moving Electronic Goods

Packing and Moving Electronic Goods

By Andrew Spatz, Packing Specialist, Truck rental.com Staff

It seems that every household these days is full of sensitive electronic goods. From computers to musical instruments, these electronics demand that we care for them in very specific ways in order to avoid damage that might come to them. This is why is it vital, in order to protect your investment, that you pack these items in a way that they will be safe during your move. No matter what moving method you choose to use, from professional to truck rental, packing electronics correctly is essential.

Packing Computers

Though they have become more resilient over the years, a computer can still be quite sensitive to jostling and jarring that might occur during a move. Towers are the most sensitive of all the pieces of a computer, and it should be packed so that it doesn't move around when it is loaded, traveling, or unloaded.

The best way to ensure its safety is to repack the tower into the original packaging. If this is not available, it is best to pack it in a box that will allow packing materials to be layered on all sides. Packing popcorn should not be used because it can cause unnecessary static buildup that could potentially damage the machine.

Be sure to label all cables and place them in a bag or box on their own so that they do not get lost. It is also a good idea to backup all of your files before you prepare your computer to be moved.

Packing Printers

Printers are also delicate parts of a computer and should be packed accordingly. Using the original packaging is optimal, but you can use a regular box if you need to. Remember to remove any ink cartridges and toner prior to packing the printer up. Make sure that there is enough room in the box that you are packing the printer in to secure it will paper or other cushioning materials.

Packing Monitors and Televisions

Monitors and televisions are often large and bulky. To this end, these items are quite difficult to pack in a regular box. Most of the time, a professional moving service will custom pack these items before moving day arrives. You should always be sure to remove any cables or antennas prior to packing these items. You should also make sure to cover the screen with a special protector to avoid any scratches that might occur during the move.

Packing Plasma and Flat Panel Screens

Packing these items can be a trying experience because they are often large investments. You should always use original packaging for maximum protection, and then place these items in another, larger box. Make sure that you mark this box clearly so that the movers are well aware of what it contains and can handle it accordingly. Most manufacturers of these items also recommend that these items sit for a few hours after you unpack them before they are turned on.

Tips for any Electronics

There are lots of different electronic goods out there. What your home contains may vary from this list, so we have provided a short compilation of tips that can apply to any electronics. Follow these tips to avoid damage to your investments while you are moving

  • Mark all boxes clearly. Anything with electronics needs to be marked with large bold lettering letting everyone know that the contents are very fragile
  • Make sure to use professional packing supplies. Anything with electronics in it should be hardy and able to withstand normal handling
  • Use cushioning. Put those linens to use and wrap your electronics up. Blankets, sheets, and towels can all help lessen an impact that can occur during your move.
  • Take your time. Pack the things that you use the least first so that you have time to pack everything properly without rushing.
