Moving Furniture and Other Large Items
By Andrew Spatz, Packing Specialist, Truck rental.com Staff
Furniture constitutes the largest part of anyone's move. These items are the main reason that we don't simply pack up in a car and drive to a new place. Furniture can be sentimental as well as an investment, so it is vital that these items be moved carefully. While you may not be able to control everything that happens during your move, you can protect your large and heavy items from becoming damaged in transit.
Couches and Easy Chairs
These large pieces of furniture can be a pain to move, literally. You should always make sure that you have a team of people to help you move large items so that you do not sustain any injuries. In order to protect your furniture, follow these simple tips when you are moving:
- Wrap your furniture in special covers to prevent damage from the elements. Many moving and storage places have specialty covers and bags that will help protect in this way.
- Take extra care when moving fabric and leather furniture through doors or other openings. If these pieces snag on something, you can suffer some pretty expensive damage.
- Make sure to clean all surfaces with an approved antibacterial cleaner prior to packing. This will prevent the growth of mold while your furniture is packed away in the dark.
- Do not stack heavy boxes on top of your furniture. This can cause crushing that will deform your furniture forever.
Moving Pianos
Pianos are quite heavy and will require a team to move them. You will either have to hire a mover to help you or you can get some of your friends and family together. Keep a few things in mind when you are packing and moving this investment.
- Wrap the piano in plastic so that you do not have to worry about damage from rain or other elements.
- Wrap the legs of the piano in cushioning so that you avoid dents or scratches.
- Make sure that whoever moves your piano is wearing gloves to protect both the piano as well as themselves.
- Take great care when rolling a piano over bumps or other obstacles. These cases can cause a piano to fall or sustain damage.
- Make sure that you can access the piano from all sides before you try to move it.
- Contact your local music store or owners manual for information on how to prepare your piano to move.
Moving Beds
Beds are a necessity for people who like a good nights sleep. They are also something that is found in every household. In order to make sure that your bed gets to your destination safely, follow these simple steps.
- Wrap the mattresses in special bags to prevent damage. This will keep out pests as well.
- Take apart any bed frames. Make sure to put any hardware into a bag and label it. You can attach this bag tot he bed frame or pack it with your personal effects.
- Wrap your bed frame in cushioning materials so that you can avoid costly damage that nicks and scratches can cause. These items are usually bulky and irregular, so it may be difficult to move them.
- Be sure to clean any cloth, mattresses, or box springs with an antibacterial product before packing them. This will prevent mold from growing on them when they are packed in the dark.
Any Large Items
It is very important that you take great care when you are moving any large items. These large things can cause injury to those who are moving them. If you are hiring professional movers, you can bet that they will be using the tools they need to protect themselves. If you are moving yourself with a team of people and a truck rental, then you should make sure that no one has a history of back problems.
