Moving Reptiles and Amphibians
By Nicole Smith, Pet Specialist, Truck rental.com Staff
Moving pets can be a difficult proposition for anyone. Once a pet is settled into a home, it seems like you are simply disturbing them if you try to transport somewhere else. But these pets are a big part of your family, so it is important that you take them with you to wherever you might end up. While reptiles and amphibians are small, and thus easier to relocate than other animals, it still requires that special steps be taken to ensure safety and comfort. Don't try to move your pets inside a moving van or truck rental either as this can be fatal.
What you will Need
A few weeks before your moving day, you should plan and prepare for the transport of your reptile or amphibian. In order to get ready, you need to purchase a few things if you do not already have them on hand.
- Small plastic container - This is the best way to transport your pet. Exceptions to this rule are larger reptiles such as iguanas or larger snakes.
- Scissors or other sharp object - You will be using these to punch small air holes in the lid of the small plastic container.
- Permanent Marker - This will be used to mark the container with what or who is inside.
How to Pack a Pet
It might seem like a silly idea, but you need to pack your pet so that they are ready to move. Always punch the holes in the top of the plastic container before you place the animal inside. Create some form of familiar bedding or provide a towel for comfort. Make sure that you place the animal in this makeshift cage carefully and place the lid on securely. Remember that many snakes are escape artists, so use tape to secure the lid if you need to.
What Never to Do
When you are transporting your pet, there are a few things that you never ever want to do. Here is a short list of some things that you need to avoid.
- Never transport your pet in their habitat. Most terrariums and habitats are made of glass and contain heavy food or water dishes along with other decorations. You could cause serious injury to your pet if you try to take them like this as something may shift within the cage, or you may drop it causing it to break.
- Never leave your pet in a cold car or in a cold area. Remember that cold blooded creatures need some form of heat in order to heat their body. Leaving your pet in the cold will cause it to go into hibernation or freeze to death.
- Never leave a snake in an unsecured holding area. Many snakes are able to pop lids off of their tanks and escape. Make sure that the lid on your snakes' holding area is secure and will not come off easily.
Your Moving Experience
It won't be long before you are in your new home. Settling your reptile or amphibian into your new home is not a difficult proposition, as long as you have a place to put their habitat and a plug to provide electricity to their heating appliances. By following these steps, you will see that transporting your favorite cold blooded friend is not near as hard as you may have imagined.
