What you Need to Know to Avoid a Moving Scam

Every consumer needs to be aware that there are some moving companies that are not above scamming to make a little extra money. As such, you need to be aware to how these scams are perpetuated before you hire a moving company. You should be aware of certain laws as well, so that you can stand up for your own rights, as you cannot expect anyone else to do it for you.
The 110% rule
When you receive an estimate for your move you should realize that it is not binding. This means that the price of your move can be a lot more than the price that is quoted. All moving companies are bound by certain laws that govern this, however. You need to know that moving charges can exceed the moving estimate, but if you pay 110% of that estimate, the moving company must release and unload all of your things. You are then granted 30 days to pay the balance.
Get it in Writing
There are a few companies out there who are happy to offer seemingly deep discounts on your relocation as long as you pay them cash. There is no record of the move and no contract to sign. What you don’t realize when you hire one of these companies is the fact that they often run off with your stuff and are never heard from again. Because there was no contract, there is no proof that anything ever happened.
Research Claims Processing
All good moving companies should be happy to explain to you how their claims process works. You should remember that anyone can accidentally drop or damage something, but only the good companies have a streamlined and tested way of dealing with this. If you are speaking with a reputable moving company, you will be able to find out all the details of filing a claim before you ever sign a contract.
Customary Practices
You should be aware of the customary practices of good moving companies. One such practice is the amount of money that you should have to pay up front. Good moving companies usually charge a small deposit, such as 25% of the total amount estimated. Remember that this deposit should always be refundable in case the home sale falls through or you do not end up needing the move.
Equipment
Take a look at the moving company and the equipment that they use. The condition of this equipment is often a good indication of how your things will be treated. Do not trust your things to a company who uses truck rentals or has a truck that is in poor repair. A good moving company will always make sure that they provide good equipment so that your things are safe during relocation.
