Creating a Schedule for your Move

Moving is never accomplished in a single day. Nor is it accomplished in a single week even. Some moves can stretch into a couple of months before everything is said and done. There are a lot of things that are going on all at once, and it is important that you keep up with every single one of them. If something falls behind or gets overlooked, you can expect to pay extra fees, damages, or other problems.
What you Need
There are a few things that you will need in order to create your moving schedule. While computers are wonderful, unless you have a handheld, you should always make your schedule out on paper. It is best to purchase a calendar or a day planner that will allow you the space to write everything in the days that events occur in. You will also need a writing utensil.
Getting Started
The first thing that you need to do when you are writing up your moving schedule is pencil in the day that you need to be out of your current home. This will end up being the basis of all other dates and choices that you will make.
Moving Day
You need to decide what moving method you will be using and you should contact companies who provide that service as soon as possible. It is best to plan to be out of your current home at least a week before the deadline. This will give you time to clean it up and get it ready for the next tenants. Schedule the cleaning service as well around this same time.
Packing
You need to consider how long you will need to pack. Remember, if you are hiring a packing service, then you need to schedule them in two to three days prior to the moving day. If you are not hiring such a service, then you need to give yourself plenty of time to pack. Some families get it done in a matter of days, while others take weeks. Take everything into consideration and then pencil in the day you will start packing.
Cleaning Out
Having a sale, or getting rid of things that you no longer use, is one way to get ready for your move. If this is something that you plan on doing, then you need to plan this in advance. Try to choose a date that is far enough ahead of your moving day so that you can donate anything that you did not sell. You should also schedule this in advance of the day that you need to have your packing completed.
Notes on Scheduling
There is no one way to make a moving schedule. What you schedule, and when you schedule it is entirely up to you and how you feel about time buffers. If you want a relaxing move, it is best to schedule things over a long period of time. If you simply do not have a lot of time, you may have to schedule things close together. As long as you do schedule things, you can be sure that your move is stress free and that you don’t miss anything important. For more information, see our example moving schedule.
